MMO Fans take note: the greatest online worlds of all time now have a higher-leveled honor not unlike those of Canton or Cooperstown in the sporting world.

Starting Thursday, the online MMO Hall of Fame is officially set to take in its first group of inductees. With the backing of a crack team voting committee staffed by CEOs, VPs, directors, producers, and gaming writers, the first year's voting has selected the games which have set high standards in the various MMO genres from a standpoint of consensus. This year's inaugural MMO inductees are Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, EverQuest, Lineage, and EVE Online.

The official threshold going forward will be at least a 60% favorable rating within the voting process as a bare minimum, as it was in this case with Lineage and EVE Online just barely hitting that minimum standard. By contrast, EverQuest was 70% favorable, World of Warcraft at 80%, and Ultima Online was completely unanimous. A large subset of the voting committee included both current and past top level employees who have been responsible for everything from EverQuest and Habbo, to Runes of Magic and World of Warcraft -- and everything in between as well, even including Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"The voting committee did a superb job of selecting the best of the best in MMOs," said Doug Kale, museum director of the online MMO Hall of Fame. "It was a well-rounded group that recognized the games that have set standards. Congratulations to the winners!"
