Warhammer 40K: Dark Milenium Canceled... in MMO Form, That Is

Bad news has come down the wire -- THQ has canceled Warhammer 40K: Dark Milenium.

Or at least in MMO form, according to the official announcement. Instead, the problematic publisher will go forward with a traditional, primarily single-player focus, affecting not only development oversight at Relic and Vigil as a result of subsequent layoffs but also the distribution model which now goes into being a premium experience.

The culprit? According to officials at THQ, it's basically simple market shifts (in this case being an inability to pick up support for its continued status as an MMO).

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with primarily single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features," said Brian Farrell, THQ President and CEO Brian Darrel in announcing the changes. "Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property."

For now, all we can do at this point is to look over existing online preview content and debate over what could have been.

UPDATE: Based on additional information over at Massively, THQ apparently is no longer emphasizing multiplayer compartmentalization of Dark Milennium as a result of the switch, thereby resulting in a slight rewording of content in this report along with specifics regarding the effects on development team personnel and various editorial corrections thereof. MMO Fan regrets any inconvenience thereof.
